Mavelous was a wonderful collaboration with its owners who came to me for assistance to turn a thirty year old sandwich shop into a chic eco café. I worked closely with the clients in creating the concept, which became a European inspired style of café & wine bar with a modern twist. My overall inspiration for the design was the art around San Francisco’s Civic Center, from cultural institutions to street art, and I collaborated with a number of local artists on various parts of the design. The pièce de résistance is a commissioned painting by cutting-edge street artist Eddie Colla that spans the entire length of the café. I based the palette on the rich colors of coffee, which range from the green fruit maturing into a golden yellow and then bright red, and a dark espresso of roasted beans. The long and narrow room was divided into a Syphon bar, a library section, café seating, and a small lounge area, which I separated with wood partitions topped with clear orange laser-cut Lucite panels representing movement. Much attention was paid to creating a green design that is both timeless and chic while celebrating local creative talent.
