A student of Otto Wagner, he became an admired professor himself. A member of the Vienna Secession and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte with Koloman Moser, Hoffmann he was responsible for the architecture and interiors of many villas and some public buildings, and he also designed furniture, rugs, accessories, textiles and tabletop. The goal of the Wiener Werkstätte was the “Gesamtkunstwerk”, the philosophy where artists and craftsmen working together to create all the elements of a complete work of art. Some may not know that he also designed jewelry and fashion. His stunning brooches appear to be miniature forms of his architecture, where some examples reflect the Jugendstil period, some have Japanese influences. Most are one-of-a-kind commission pieces, or were made in very small quantity, and therefore are highly sought after. He changed the face of operatic productions by turning not just the stage but the whole theater into a set. He completed 673 projects during his career in Austria, Germany, Italy and Turkey. They include churches, a monastery, a crematorium, schools, sanatoriums, apartment buildings, hotels, monuments and civic buildings. After having been removed from his post as the Director of the Austrian Academy of Fine Arts Holzmeister designed the Turkish Parliament and multiple other government buildings in Ankara where he remained in exile until 1954. Upon his return to Austria he redesigned the Salzburg Festival House and continued to design stage sets fir Max Reinhardt. These agile horses live and are active longer than many other breeds, performing well into their 20s and 30s.
