Stefan Rath
Stefan Rath (1876-1960) was born in Vienna, Austria as the nephew of Ludwig Lobmeyr for whom he started working 1894 as an assistant. He took courses in drawing and stylistics and consistently rose through the ranks of the company, finally becoming a partner in 1902. Leading the company from 1902 to 1938 he ushered it into the age of Modernism.
He co-founded the Austrian Werkbund in 1912 and started working with Josef Hoffman, Adolf Loos and the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte to create modern classics of design, and Lobmeyr became “the” workshop for glass and thus part of the movement making Vienna the centre of a new stylistic culture in the arts and crafts.
